Footmen Wars Play

Footmen Wars Online

The Warcraft 3 footies classic, rebuilt for your browser. Your barracks spawns toy soldiers from history, every kill pays gold, and the last base standing wins.

That's a real match playing back there. Jump in and take a bot's corner.

Early access: free to play in your browser while we keep building it.

Pick your army

Every army is a toy line from a real era, and each one plays a little differently. All eight are in the game now, and you pick yours when the first tier-up opens at 2:30.

A man-at-arms in mail with a blue kite shield, a grey stone castle behind him

Knights

Steel from helmet to boots. Arrows do less to them, and they march a little slower for it.

An ashigaru swordsman in black armor and a black conical hat, a white castle and cherry blossoms behind him

Samurai

They make the first cut count: a hard opening hit on every new enemy, for a little less health.

A hoplite in a crested bronze helmet with a round blue shield, a hill town by the sea behind him

Greeks

Keep them shoulder to shoulder and they take less damage up close. Their stone throwers reach farther too.

An axeman with a round blue shield, a longship and a turf-roofed longhouse in a fjord behind him

Vikings

The closer they are to falling, the harder they swing. They spawn fast but drop a little easier.

A steppe swordsman in a fur-trimmed coat with a curved sword, felt tents and grazing horses behind him

Mongols

The fastest army on the table, and their riders come out of the barracks sooner.

A shield guard in a quilted coat with a sabre and a blue shield, a long wall and a river behind him

Chinese

Crossbows by the crowd. Pack five shooters together and they fire faster.

A warrior in quilted white cotton armor with a round shield, a lake city and volcanoes behind him

Aztecs

Every warrior is out to earn a name. Three kills buys a rank that makes him tougher and hit harder, up to three ranks.

A sickle-sword warrior with a tall blue shield, palms and the Nile behind him

Egyptians

Pull back and they patch up. A few seconds out of the fight and they heal on their own.

Wondering how the real ones compare? Who would win, with the real history.

Lead with a hero

As the match opens, you pick one of eight heroes from history. Any hero can lead any army. Heroes grow stronger as they fight, and a fallen hero comes back after a short wait.

Miyamoto Musashi in a black robe, sword raised, a castle and cherry trees behind him

Miyamoto Musashi

Hero hunter. Each strike on the same foe comes faster, up to four in a row.

Tomoe Gozen on a brown horse with a long naginata, a snowy mountain behind her

Tomoe Gozen

Area damage. Shoots from the saddle without stopping her horse.

Joan of Arc in silver armor holding a white banner, a castle and a stone bridge behind her

Joan of Arc

Support. Allies near her heal 1% of their health a second and march 8% faster.

Liang Hongyu beating a war drum, a walled river town and junks behind her

Liang Hongyu

Support. Allies near her strike 20% faster.

Leonidas in a crested bronze helmet with spear and shield, Spartans and a sea cliff behind him

Leonidas

Tank. He and the allies beside him take 20% less damage.

William Wallace raising a long sword, a stone tower and green hills behind him

William Wallace

Tank. Takes 30% less damage while he stands and fights.

Lagertha with sword and round shield raised, a longship and mountains behind her

Lagertha

Area damage. Every fourth strike stuns her foe for 1 s.

Cuauhtemoc in an eagle helmet with a war club, a lake city and volcanoes behind him

Cuauhtemoc

Hero hunter. Deals 30% more damage to heroes.

A match, start to finish

Four barracks sit in the corners of the table with one tower in the middle. Gold only comes from kills, and you spend it to tier up and choose what your barracks makes. The times below come straight from the current build, and we are still tuning them.

The whole table from above, nine minutes into a four-player match: the red, blue, teal and bronze barracks in the corners, sand paths through autumn woods, a river ring and the stone tower in the middle, with soldiers marching toward it
A real match in the game, nine minutes in, with four bots.
  1. Your barracks opens

It spawns a footman every 8 seconds. They head for the center on their own, and you decide where they go from there.

  2. Pick your army

The first tier-up opens. Choose one of eight armies, and your barracks starts making their soldiers. More tiers open at 4:30 and 7:30, each with a new kind of unit.

  3. Bases can fall

Every base is safe until now. From here, an army that reaches a barracks can knock a player out. Each barracks shoots back, so a push takes a real army, not three footmen.

  4. The table closes in

Every base slowly loses health and the center starts sending waves, so a match ends at a sensible time instead of running for an hour.

Built on a Warcraft III classic

Footmen Wars started as a custom game genre in Warcraft III, where players have hosted footies lobbies since the early 2000s. People still ask for a version you can just open and play. This is ours: rebuilt from scratch for the browser, with our own armies, art and rules, and bots in every empty seat so a match can start the moment you arrive.

We owe the genre to the people who made the maps, and we name them on our history of Footmen Frenzy and Footmen Wars. New to all of it? Start with what Footmen Wars is.

Questions people ask

Is Footmen Wars Online free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser, with no account to make, nothing to pay for and no ads.

Do I need to download anything?

No. The whole game runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to install. Open the page and play.

Can I play it on my phone?

Yes. It plays on phones, tablets and computers. On a touch screen you tap the ground to rally your soldiers, tap a base to attack it, or tap the tower to hold the center. Older phones can switch to Light graphics in Settings.

How long is a match?

In our bot tests, matches end in 12 to 22 minutes. From 18:00 every base starts to crumble and the center sends waves, so even a close match ends a few minutes later.

Is it the same as Footmen Frenzy in Warcraft 3?

No, but it is inspired by it. Footmen Frenzy and the other footies maps for Warcraft III gave us the idea: four corners, barracks that spawn soldiers on a timer, gold from every kill, and the last base standing wins. Ours is a new game built from scratch, with our own armies, art and rules, and it is not made by or linked to Blizzard or the map makers. Read what Footmen Wars is and the history of the maps.

Can I play against bots?

Yes, that is how every match plays right now: you and three bots, one in each corner. The bots tier up, pick armies and heroes, shop, and fight over the center like a player would.

Can I play with friends?

Not yet. For now bots take every empty seat. Online rooms for up to 12 friends are what we are building next.

What armies and heroes are there?

There are eight armies from history: Knights, Samurai, Greeks, Vikings, Mongols, Chinese, Aztecs and Egyptians. You pick yours when the first tier-up opens at 2:30. Any of the eight heroes can lead any army: Miyamoto Musashi, Tomoe Gozen, Joan of Arc, Liang Hongyu, Leonidas, William Wallace, Lagertha and Cuauhtemoc.

Who makes Footmen Wars Online?

Tin Whistle Games, who also make Sheep Tag Online, another Warcraft 3 custom game rebuilt for the browser.
